This was recorded on Patriots Day, a Massachusetts holiday commemorating the start of the American Revolution. While I’m far from a patriotic person, I like this holiday. The main reason is because it’s the one time during the baseball season that Red Sox play in the morning, starting at 11 AM. I managed to watch most of the game (and the Sox won—not too common an occurrence so far this season although things are looking up) and still get the show done on a relatively efficient basis.
It’s also Easter week, so I’ve got all your favorites (maybe) about Easter, Jesus, crucifixions and, of course, bunnies! And I can’t ignore the Boston Marathon, which is also run on Patriots Day, so tribute is paid there as well.

Sonic Overload 4/11/11
Yes, I rant a bit around the middle of the show—fed up, as usual, with the new budget being hammered out by Congress and Obama, barely averting a government shutdown. In brief, it’s obvious that Obama is willing to kowtow to the Republicans’ slash and burn economic policy. That means cuts to programs meant to protect the most vulnerable people in this country. What else is new? A radical agenda and Obama’s unwillingness to stand up the Republicans during the first two years of his administration has led us to this point. And when I hear Obama considering cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, I’m waiting for his announcement that he’s joined the Republican Party. OK, that’s a stretch but no matter how far to the center or right he moves, the teabaggers will still try to label him a socialist. And they’ll continue to destroy any progress that’s been made over the last 100 or so years, especially what’s left of the New Deal.
But enough of that—you’ll hear it on the show although the invective is held to a relative minimum. You’re here for the punk rock and that’s what you’ll get...

I don’t mention it on the show but today (April 4) is the 43rd anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. So let’s all pause for a moment and remember this great man. And, as I’ve said before, it’s sickening that the Republicans continue to try to claim King as one of their own when their party runs counter to everything that King believed in.
I also hope that this past week’s snowstorm on April Fool’s Day (of course) will be the last time I have to get out the shovel this spring. At least it was only an inch or two and not the two feet or so we got on April Fool’s Day in 1997. But I’ll keep my mouth shut now. I’m not a superstitious type but why chance it?
And, in case you’re wondering, the line about “heartfelt shit” comes from Halo Of Flies’ “No Time” but it’s a lie. Plenty of hearfelt shit here. What’s the point, otherwise?

I’m finally getting around to digging into the box of new and recent (and not-so-recent) 7”s and it looks as though it yielded at least a few neglected gems. Plus there’s the usual assortment of other old and new stuff. I had a great time seeing Tear It Up in Brooklyn this past weekend and would like to thank Audrey and Howard for giving me a last-minute place to stay. It’s unlikely there will be another reunion anytime soon, if ever, but I hope Tear It Up will at least consider the possibility of another show or two—maybe in Boston next time...

Sonic Overload 3/21/11
This week’s show begins with a brief BBC News clip from 2003 about the US invasion of Iraq, which happened on March 20, 2003. The bombing of Baghdad was called “shock and awe.” The beginning of an illegal war and Obama finally ended military operations last year. As I say on the show, there are still troops in Afghanistan and, this past weekend, bombing of Libya has commenced as well. Obama claims it will be a short operation but I think we’ve all heard that before... let’s hope it’s actually true this time. I’m still sorting through the information out there and trying to find out (as everyone else is) what’s going on, the motivations, etc. The claim is it’s to prevent Khadafy (or however you spell it) from killing the anti-government rebels in eastern Libya.
So much going on—Libya, the nuclear meltdowns and devastation in Japan, the ongoing labor struggles in Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio. I don’t take up the entire show discussing these issues but urge people to try to inform themselves and not rely on the mainstream news media—ESPECIALLY Fox News but I think most of you know that already...
